…………………………………………………………………….

If you follow the ‘D’List we normally look at 3 new things in the world of disability from concepts to things you can actually buy. However, for Xmas we’re looking at gifts for people and children with disabilities. This is the second Xmas List, the first can be seen here.

1ST If you’ve been really, really good Santa may get you a Huka Pendel or Nippi wheelchair scooter. They’re amazing as you just wheel in and away you go…….

Unfortunately the Pendel is only available to purchase from The Netherlands and the prices start at €11,800. It’s approved in Europe as a vehicle as a medical aid. It has a top speed of 25kmh and the battery capacity means that it will run for 40 to 60 kilometres.

If you want something a bit cheaper try the NIPPI it’s….

‘a versatile three wheel road machine powered by a motor scooter engine. The skillfully designed award winning NIPPI converts your wheelchair into a speedy roadworthy machine. For those who do not use a wheelchair a comfortable seat makes you more mobile’.

New NIPPI’s cost from £6995.00 and they do have some pre-owned NIPPI’s starting from around £2995.00 (NB 2015 prices). There’s also the TRIPPI which is a more modern mobility scooter for the more agile amongst us. It’s ‘coolest petrol driven mobility scooter on the market today’, you tell us is it??

2ND If you’ve been not so good, maybe Santa will give you a cheaper way to make your wheelchair go faster such as the Batec Electric handbike that

‘offers you a 2 in 1 approach to your needs: a unique solution that will revolutionise your mobility outdoors, without having to renounce to the advantages of your manual wheelchair.’

Designed by Pau Bach in Barcelona who’s also a quadriplegic, it’s a battery operated front wheel that you attach to your manual wheelchair. There are three versions the URBAN that goes up to 14km/hour, the ELECTRIC that speeds up to 20Km/hr and the RAPID that goes up to 30Km/hr. They also have a QUAD version for people with upper and lower mobility issues. Worldwide stockists can be found here and price for the ELECTRIC is £4595, the QUAD is £4895 and the RAPID is £5207.

3RD is The Firefly a less costly electric cycle, that attaches to the front of most rigid frame wheelchairs and even some folding models of manual wheelchairs. Firefly is limited to a maximum speed of 8 mph at the factory but the limiter is easily removed to increase the speed to a maximum of 12.5 MPH. It costs around £1895 and certainly looks easy to use.

Anyone tried a Firefly or the Batec let us know your experience, contact us? I’ve used an older version of a wheel attachment and found it heavy to fix on and off. I needed help putting it on the wheelchair but the videos seem to show that these versions are much easier to use.

4TH, we normally stick to 3 new things but these are too cute to leave out, they’re electric chairs for children. Designability supplies the Wizzybug pictured below. As they say

‘Generally there is no NHS funding for powered mobility for children under 5 so we fundraise to make Wizzybugs available, FREE of charge (for loan), to children in the British Isles (excluding Northern Ireland)……………..

Through the scheme, a child can have a Wizzybug for as long as they can benefit (this is usually until they outgrow it) and when they have completed their loan, they return their Wizzybug and we refurbish it for another child.’

You can also buy one at £4750 but either way you need to contact their Children’s Occupational Therapy team on 01225 824103, to see if a Wizzybug is suitable for your child.

You can find more information here and they are also looking for supporters. So maybe give something back at Xmas and support them, use this link to donate.

Next ‘D’ List will feature far cheaper Xmas present options for the less able, if you can’t wait take a look at our previous Xmas present reviews.
