Over the years we’ve collected images of what we term ‘Ludicrous (Disabled) Loos’ and ‘Ridiculous Ramps’ – see previous articles. Since 2016 we’ve named and shamed the worst disabled toilets at our annual Blue Badge Access Awards. Something the press love to write about.
In 2019/20 the BBAA Ludicrous Loo award went to The BeachSide Grill, Saunton, Devon. They had only one grab rail (the recommendation/regulation is 5 bars) which was rendered useless because a retractable bar, for side transfers, is placed next to the wall. They also used the toilet as a cleaning storeroom!! Other previous winners included Cafe Royal and Tom’s Kitchen in London.
Here’s an update on further contenders from around the world………..
In this toilet in New York there’s space but bars only on one side (it’s commonplace as their standard in USA??)………………If you know of other contenders for Ludicrous Loo please contact us
My award for best toilets is City Lit college toilet in London which has a changing places bench and all rails and pull cords in the right place, and is a very big room which is not used as a cupboard.
We will add these to the list of nominations for the Blue Badge Access Awards, see http://www.bluebadgeaccessawards.com
