Update 2015: Viajante in The Town Hall Hotel is now The Typing Room with Great British Menu chef Lee Westcott at the helm. You can see him at work in this clip
He worked at Tom Aikens in Chelsea (now no more sadly, the restaurant that is Tom’s Kitchen still exists see our review here), Noma in Copenhagen (always top of the list of best restaurants) & The Savoy. So a good pedigree that the following reviews confirm:
The Guardian, describes the food as ‘bloody marvellous’, done with ‘delicacy and wit’ and Fay Maschler of The Evening Standard describes his cooking ‘a triumph’.
He makes vegetables his signature preparing them in unusual ways in unusual combinations such as ‘Yeasted Cauliflower, Raisins, Capers and Mint’. Can’t wait to find an excuse to go as he prepares tasting menus at £60 for 5 courses alongside a set lunch of 2 courses at £24 so not overly expensive. Additionally as noted below, the location within the Town Hall Hotel has good accessibility and facilities.
A provisional 2.5 BBSTicks for the Typing Room.

Viajante is a Michelin starred restaurant in Bethnal Green. Viajante (inside the Town Hall Hotel – see previous review), apparently means “traveller” in Portuguese and they have incorporated this into their very interesting and different menu serving dishes such as ‘Brill with duck tongue, beetroot and toasted milk’ and for dessert you can have “Jerusalem artichokes, chocolate soil and blood orange.”
Their access is much more simple than their menu – steps and a ramp to get in, flat inside and they have a disabled toilet! Brilliant!!
Viajante gets a provisional 3 BBS Ticks
