I and the Sartorial Lieutenant went to the Savoy Grill (a Gordon Ramsay joint) just after the refurbishment of the Savoy Hotel in 2011.

It was fine for the wheelchair as it’s flat and at ground level. It was good food and service but as the other tables were rather too close, I found our neighbours conversation distracting!! It was difficult not to listen to what was an intimate conversation about one of their marriages?!

The Grill serves high class British classics (read expensive comfort food) and I did like the flambéed Baked Alaska. They operate the ‘2 hour table rule’ which I would normally avoid but as I wanted to experience the whole Savoy ‘thing’, I put my principles to one side. I couldn’t access The American Bar without the use of the Stair Climber, (at least they have one), and as you have to queue to get in, I couldn’t be bothered with the fuss. The disabled toilets I did not try but I can’t imagine they are not in-keeping with the beautiful Art Deco style of the Savoy. They’re on the same level as the Grill, so if you get to The American Bar beware you have to come back downstairs to use them.

There is also the Thames Foyer to try where they serve the hotel’s famous afternoon tea and the new Beaufort Bar is also on my list as it has an ‘Art Deco interior of jet-black and gold, serves champagne and cocktails and offers a nightly cabaret’.

Definitely a stylish experience and they have done the best they can with regard to accessibility in a Grade II, multi-level, Listed Building so they are awarded 3 BBS Ticks.

N.B. Just an amendment – the disabled toilet is accessed via a lift from the Ground Floor Grill!
