The Blue Badge Style Sports Blog has started up recently to help provide information on how the less able can get involved in sport. In the last week, news stories have shown that this is still something that people need more information about.
Recently, news has emerged that the Paralympic legacy may not have been quite as strong as people had hoped. A survey, conducted by the Sport and Recreation Alliance, has concluded that almost nine in of ten sports clubs have seen no increase in disabled members since London 2012. For more information on this, this video from BBC News is well worth a watch. The Paralympics undoubtedly inspired people but the effect seems to have been more limited than hoped.
Sophie Christiansen, who featured in our second sports blog, told the BBC that she feels that “the word legacy has been bandied about ever since the bid. It’s just a word, until it’s put into action. And I think that should be done properly.” This is the reason we set up our sports blog. We hope to inform and encourage our readers to get involved.
At Blue Badge Style we continue to remember and continue to admire how spectacular the London Paralympics were. But we also want to follow through on the promise of the Games and try to help people get involved in sports. The Blue Badge Style ethos has always been that being less able shouldn’t prevent people from doing what they want. Whether that be eating in smart restaurants, wearing elegant clothes or participating in and enjoying sports.
With that in mind, we’ve been getting some Paralympic stars to write about their experiences at the Games and to inform our readers on how they can get into disabled sports. So far we’ve featured an interview with Sophie and a post by Paralympic swimming medalist Susie Rodgers. Tomorrow we’re featuring another guest post, from Wheelchair Rugby athlete Myles Pearson. In the future we have several blogs lined up by athletes from sports including: Wheelchair Basketball, Archery, Skiing, Rowing and Boccia. The posts are engaging, informative and well worth a read.
Check in every Friday to find out how to get involved in sport!
