Listing Description

As part of our annual visits to Shoreditch and The East End we visited a cool bar in Old Street – Tāyer Elementary.

Launched in 2019, it’s a new style of cocktail bar, industrial in design and divided into 2 parts. The front bar with it’s communal counters including a lower one which was ideal for my wheelchair. The rear room served the most unusual and flavoursome food and it’s where all the magic happens. All the cocktails and home made beers and wines can be purchased in their online shop including the ‘sandalwood martini’ and the ‘bergamot margarita’. I think we tried both and lovely they were although I can’t quite remember!!

At Tayēr,

through the partition, there’s more of an experimental, scientific vibe to the drinks and new concoctions are produced daily. It’s not elaborate yet has a great style in the simplicity of the surroundings, with drinks delivered in beautiful glasses. Although it’s not cheap it is average London prices at £13-£18 ea. There’s an extensive Sake list as well as beers, wine and ciders.

It was here we tried some of their small plates which were delicious mix of the Portuguese/Chinese origins of the bar’s founders. The food included an Iberian pork katsu, sando and Ox Cheek Quesidilla. They both worked/trained with Nuno Mendes of Chiltern Firehouse and you can see his influence in the high quality of the food.

Finally, there are no reservations and areas/seating exists for people who don’t like bar stools and even though the music was of house/hip-hop genres, you could still hear each other. Everywhere was well lit even the back room, Tāyer, that had dark decor and the accessible toilet had all the right features and ingenious storage in the ceiling that meant it had plenty of room for wheelchair manoeuvres.

They are No.2 in the Worlds 50 Best Bars in 2022 and we agree they should get plenty of plaudits therefore we give them 3 BBS Ticks for plenty of style and good accessibility.

The Entrance is Flat and a Lower Bar Counter is Ideal for a Wheelchair. Not Too Noisy Given The Hard Wood Surfaces & Well Lit
Tāyer is the Back Room Where The Drinks & Food Experiments Happen. Seating is at The Bar and There Were a Couple of Lower Tables. Very Dark and Heavy House/Rap Music Was Not Over Powering
Cocktails are Experimental. Can’t Remember What We Had but it Was a Great Night
The Ice Cubes Were Also Immense
The Disabled Toilet is at The Back of The Bar and Well Equipped….The Red Cord Did Hit the Floor
Even Had Toiletries at the Door For a Quick Makeup Refresh
Ingenious Storage in a Small Space Meant the Disabled Toilet Was Uncluttered & Free For Wheelchair Use. Maybe a BBAA Best Loo Contender
