Listing Description

No. 1 Duke St. fills a gap in Richmond as it’s not ‘high end’ restaurant and not a ubiquitous adolescent filled pub. It’s in between the two, a…

“neighbourhood bar and restaurant with a contemporary interior providing the perfect back drop for relaxed eating and drinking.”

Entrance to No.1 - Flat Once You Get Over a short Cobbled Slope
Entrance to No.1 – Flat Once You Get Over a short Cobbled Slope

Open all day it attracts all age groups. We’ve been a number of times and the food is good and the wine & cocktails better. We recommend the crispy peppered squid and the mix of crostini especially the avocado & crab. Good music and it’s louder at night so don’t expect to have a deep conversation. The service is variable and can be efficient to lax……we’ve often had to go to the bar to ask for service. It’s well decorated, light and airy with a bar area plus a quieter lounge, with leather seats and open fire. Upstairs is a private hire and games room, accessed via a lift. It’s also possible to sit outside in the courtyard but you can’t reserve tables there.

Cosy Seating Area Good For Conversation & Room For a Wheelchair
Tables & Banquette Seating Surrounds the Bar
Central Bar in Light & Airy Room (DToilet is at Rear)

The access is good once you get up the slope of the initial cobbled courtyard and there’s a small door frame lip at the entrance. Once inside it’s smooth flat flooring throughout but many of the tables have inconvenient legs for a wheelchair. They will try and find you a suitable table if you warn them but beware the messages don’t always get through in this busy bar. There’s an exemplary  disabled toilet at the rear so try and get a table nearby as it does get crowded and you may not wish to fight through the evening crowd. Day time is much more calm and relaxed. No.1 Duke St. does what it says on the tin – relaxed eating & drinking – accessible too, they get 2 BBS Ticks.
