Accessibility and great style remains the same as per below.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Another hotel up for a BBS Access Award on 4th Oct. 2017 is The Mondrian at Sea Containers on the South Bank. Nominated by a number of readers for it’s great accessibility. We had a ‘show around’ last year and it certainly had the ‘style’ factor. Located on the South Bank in the old 70’s office block of The Sea Containers company, they claim they bring a ‘bold new energy to London, blending the style and sophistication of the boutique brand with Southbank’s eclectic vibe’. You certainly get this feeling when you enter on the unassuming roadside entrance where there’s a long, rather steep, ramp and then you’re faced with a reception desk encased in copper and a bold sculpture that’s a ‘Diamond Propellor by Maciej Urbanek’. You suddenly get it when they say it’s a nautical theme and the reception is the ship’s hull. Not as kitsch as it sounds but a beautiful thought provoking scheme by designer Tom Dixon.

We were then taken via a well lit cruise-style corridor to see one of the 36 accessible rooms, all with river views and designed to resemble cabins. They were small but a wheelchair wasn’t a problem. The wardrobe rail was at a good height and the carpet was a short pile. The bed was a little too low and the fuschia pink was bold colour choice but gave a good light contrast in a well lit room.

The bathroom on first inspection appeared to have no grab rails but they have installed a scheme of removable bars that are attached to metal coverings. Shame the fittings once attached were the usual white plastic – but we’re being picky!

Ah But Wait, They Affix Bars to Those Metal Plates
Same Applies to The Loo – Clever!

We then visited the rooftop bar called ‘The Rumpus Room’, where stairs are overcome by a wheelchair lift. Great views and plenty of room for a wheelchair. The accessible toilet continues the ‘cruise styling’ and great to see that disability is not ignored.

They also have a Curzon Cinema in the hotel, with a wheelchair space and an accessible Spa with a suitable changing room. It also houses another sculpture – a teardrop. No pool but they have steam rooms and a relaxation area.

Finally we went to the multi award winning Dandelyan Bar on the riverside. Run by Ryan Chetiyawardana a.k.a. Mr Lyan, it was named Best Cocktail Bar at The Spirited Awards 2017. Known for it’s root based natural cocktails it’s no surprise that they are nominated as Best Upmarket Bar at our Awards on 4th Oct. This is also a venue that is spacious, smooth floored and totally accessible. They serve cocktails such as The Bankside Swizzle (rum, pineapple cordial, Aperol & lemon balm) as well as afternoon Wyld Tea. The service was as excellent as the cocktails. There was also another nearby disabled loo.

Luxurious as You’d Expect at The ‘Cruise Ship Styled’ Mondrian Hotel

It was wonderful to see accessibility incorporated into the style of a venue and there’s no surprise that the Mondrian gets the maximum 3 BBS Ticks and a nomination as a Best Hotel in our 2017 Awards.
