Listing Description

Update July 2016: Lurra is great food especially the grilled octopus but avoid eating the head, as I did, not a delicacy! The very pleasant waiter said I was brave – he didn’t know I did it by accident. The wine is good and reasonably priced we had the Prineous at £22. The other dishes we recommend are the Gernika Peppers grilled with salt, the Cochifrito (fried pork pieces with honey) and the Marnis dessert with Honey. Access is flat but to get to the main dining area there are two steps therefore you either sit outside or at the shop front of the restaurant. The only issue is it’s quite darkly lit at night. They get an audited 2 BBS Ticks as it’s definitely got style and the ambience is jolly & trendy with good food.

…………………………………………………………….We recently reviewed the latest area of London to get an upgrade – Marylebone. An area that had just a few good restaurants is now brimming with them, lead by the Chiltern Firehouse, see their review. One we’ve overlooked is Lurra that opened last year and is the latest in the new wave of Spanish restaurants to hit London. It’s food from the Basque country and uses the region’s traditional charcoal and wood grills in an open kitchen. We’ve yet to go but The Independent gave a good description of its accessibility, obviously by accident:

“A tiny entrance area holding a few tables opens into an airy, glowing lightbox of a room, with one glass wall overlooking a courtyard dining space. ……… there’s an open kitchen with counter seating. There’s also – hoorah – space, and marble tables, and sturdy chairs, and it’s comfortable and well lit, and you can book (just saying.)”………..as opposed to the new style of queueing, Ed.

The Indepenent raved about the food which consists of small sharing plates plus large plates that are: 14 year aged Rubia Gallega “Galician Blond” Beef,  Slow cooked Suckling Lamb Shoulder Ÿ and Whole Grilled TurbotŸ. The smaller plates include ‘prawn croquetas……..parcels of bisque-heavy bechamel loaded with tiny, sweet shrimp. Then an elegant tempura-battered courgette flower filled with silken cod brandade. Striped from the charcoal grill, a horn of squid holds a smoky-sweet dice of chorizo and prawn, anchored by a lick of squid-ink sauce.’

Unfortunately no disabled toilet but they have an arrangement with a restaurant across the street, Sandy’s. Looks good and we give them an unaudited 2 BBS Ticks.
