Listing Description

I was invited to see the new hotel in Whitehall – Great Scotland Yard. Located in the old police station and cells, known as Scotland Yard.

On arrival there are stairs down to reception so to enter a Sesame Stairlift has been installed, where the stairs disappear and a wheelchair lift appears. You can see how it works in this video and it was a sign that no expense was spared in creating an accessible environment at the hotel, (I was leaving the hotel but you get the gist!).

Behind reception which is brightly lit with smooth flooring there’s The 40 Elephants bar.

It has an amazing sculpture/chandelier that represents broken glass of various robberies by

‘ a 18th to 20th century all-female London crime syndicate who specialised in shoplifting. This gang was notable for its longevity and skill in avoiding police detection.’ You go girls! A nod to the buildings history.

Although the bar has high seating there are low wheelchair height tables where you can get one of their signature cocktails such as ‘diamonds are a girls best friend’. Not cheap at £17 but very enjoyable. Nearby is their glamorous accessible toilet which is nominated for a Blue Badge Access Award.

Great Scotland Yard Hotel’s Accessible Toilet Within Easy Reach of Bar & Restaurant. Lovely Design In-keeping With Style of Hotel

As for the rooms in Great Scotland Yard, there are a number of accessible rooms and the wheelchair accessible room was excellent with plenty of space and well designed using the same decor as the other hotel rooms.

Wide Entrance to Accessible Room. Light & Bright For an Old Police Station
My Bug Bear – Hanging Wardrobe Rails Too High For a Wheelchair User
Super Sized Wet Room. Beautifully Decorated With All the Correct Grab Rails & Sink at Wheelchair Height
Good Accessible Toilet &…..
Spacious Shower Area With Enough Grab Rails to Make You Feel Secure on Shower Seat

So everything you need for a glamorous stay in an old police station! I won’t tell you about the restaurant, Ekstedt at the Yard, as that’s a whole other review – suffice to say it was a great gastronomic experience. GSY get a well deserved maximum 3 BBS Ticks for style, access and facilities. All that’s missing is some good information showcasing their accessibility on their website – like an Access Gallery!
