Update May 2017: Eneko is very accessible (via lifts in the One Aldwych hotel), however, not the bar which is up a large winding staircase. The menu has somewhat changed and in the evening it’s not so much tapas but full meals &/or a tasting menu (which looked spectacular, if you’re hungry). The pork croquette to start was lovely but rich and the desserts were sublime especially the Basque custard. The disabled toilet is just off the main restaurant.

Eneko is the new restaurant and wine bar in the basement of the One Aldwych Hotel. It’s a partnership with the hotel and Eneko Atxa, the chef behind three times michelin-starred Azurmendi (16th in World’s Best Restaurants). The restaurant provides ‘fresh modern Basque dishes’.

The wine list is spanish except for some champagnes and most of the wine is sold by the glass. We haven’t tried the food but we have audited the access. Re the food:

The Spectator reported that they were recommended to try

‘squid marmitako, a squidgy stew in a rich broth. I should have done what I was told because I fell for the Txerri Boda Pork Festival, with Iberico ham and mushroom duxelles in milk bread, suckling pig brioche, crispy pork jowl. It arrived in a wooden box with a carved piggy head on the lid which opened to reveal a glass liner over a photograph of an Autumnal wood scene. Cute, but over-thought.’

Sounds unique and the pudding trolley below looks tempting so will be eating there soon.

The Standard said at it’s opening,

“solid, enjoyable fare…………… if Eneko continues to improve and refine over the coming months, it stands a chance to be spoken of on its own terms, and not just as the little sister of Azurmendi. Good luck to them. Fire the interior decorator. ”

I didn’t mind the interior but was a little disappointed that there was no access to the bar as it’s up a large staircase. However the restaurant is accessible via a lift in the hotel (the front entrance has stairs) and there is a disabled toilet just outside the main dining room.
