Update 2021: Post Covid19 The Canal House is open (outside) & accessible

Canal House, in Nottingham, is surely a unique pub in that there is an actual working canal running through the middle of the building. It’s a really cool feature in this large red brick pub which has possibly the largest selection of continental beer in Nottingham.

Canal House Outside Area is Accessible & There’s a Lift to a Disabled Toilet. 2 Provisional BBS Ticks

We first came across it in a list of the Top 10 English Pubs from National Geographic. They described The Canal House as a “lively city pub” with “real ales from local brewery Castle Rock and hearty helpings of good pub food.” The canal inside is fun and there’s also a nice waterside terrace outside.

Getting into the pub is probably not that comfortable because it’s in the cobbled canal side area. But the accessibility inside is pretty good. The main entrance has steps to get in but they have ramped access around the corner. There is a disabled toilet in the first floor area and there is a lift to get up there. So you can see that they’ve done the odd thing here and there to make the pub more accessible.

The little bridge that runs over the canal inside is a bit humped so might not be easy for less able people (especially unaided wheelchair users) but you can get over it. If not there’s another way around anyway – the bridge is just a bit of fun.

The Canal House is a really interesting building with good access and facilities, barring the odd problem here and there. We give it a provisional 2 BBS Ticks.
