Listing Description

Update Sept 2017: Bryn Williams Porth Eirias is nominated for a second year as Best Budget Restaurant at The BBS Awards so The Relative Lieutenant went and audited with the following results.

“It was an overcast, rainy day in N.Wales and so we went for lunch to BBS recommended “Bryn Williams at Porth Eirias”. Porth Eirias is not actually a place but a building with a garden on its roof (accessible brilliantly if you dont mind the slope – see pics). It houses the Bryn Williams restaurant and some other facilities for watersports …. and it has a kids (adults ?) exercise/play area. All over looking Colwyn Bay.

Using the postcode we got for Bryn, The satnav sent us to the old derelict Colwyn Bay pier (see pic, not at all stylish!) and the Porth Eirias building is not immediately obvious as a restaurant location. Never mind,  along the promenade there is lots of free parking and you can easily take a stroll along it and again accessibility is good (Parking also free at Porth Eirias.). The other good news is that the old pier is finally being demolished (long and sad story) to make way for more restos, bars and so on … I assume the accessibility will be just as good as Porth Eirias.

Bryn has the luxury  of two disabled loos, well equipped but with the usual problems of alarm cord in the air not on the ground and a bit cramped on one side and support handles up not down;  but with light that switches on when you enter the loos (nice!!). (see pics)

From the perspective of lunch as a good “budget” lunch then here are the details: special of the day (for £16) was Sea Bream main course and chocolate parfait dessert. Starter extra …. Given the quality of the food I think this is good value but we went a la carte. For relative lieutenant and wife – total £82 (ouch?)

Glass of wine to start £6, ham hock and lamb belly starters (both delicious 9/10) £15, fish pie for 2 – £28  (we liked this but disagreed on the mushrooms in a fish pie …. so 7/10 only). Bottle of verdicchio (very nice) £22 (8/10 and good value… ). One dessert (deconstructed cheese cake with honeycomb, strawbs and no cake bit) £6, 2 coffees £5.40.

As you will see from the pictures the access is excellent (inside and out ) and views perfect – large windows overlooking the bay.  There is even a takeaway where you can pop in and buy selected Bryn snacks … A special mention to Shirley and Eddy (the lady on the scooter and her husband for giving us the background to the pier situation.

Don’t Let The Satnav Take You to The Pier by Mistake
Broad Flat Entrance With Free Parking
Smooth Chequered Pathway
Flat Door Entrance

All in all we had a lovely lunch at Bryn and it seems perfect for accessibility – the journey from car park to table is basically flat all the way and there was lots of room between tables.”

Lovely View of Colwyn Bay
Open kitchen/Bar
One of Two Accessible Toilets
Lamb Belly Was a Delicious Starter
Good Looking Ham Hock
Followed by Fish Pie

……………………………………………………………………………………………..

Bryn William’s at Porth Eirias in Colwyn Bay on the North Wales coast has only recently opened and is run by Bryn Williams one of Britain’s top chefs who regularly appears on BBC’s Saturday Kitchen and has worked with Marco Pierre White and Michel Roux. This café/bar/restaurant is a big open space with informal dining. They have flat access throughout and a disabled toilet. Their ethos is ‘you can do what you like’. They serve breakfast, small grazing plates or a full dinner menu and all a few minutes from the beach. Sounds lovely and we award them an unaudited 3 BBS Ticks. If anyone has been let us know what it’s like! Let’s hope they adopt a BBS Gallery to highlight the accessibility & get more people with disabilities out and enjoying Colwyn Bay??
