Listing Description

Update Aug 2017: The Almeida restaurant has become the restaurant Radici. It’s still owned by D&DLondon and is run by Chef Patron Francesco Mazzei who as the word Radici (roots) suggests, he’s creating the rustic Calabrian dishes of his childhood. He was chef at L’Anima in the City and moved to my favourite restaurant Sartoria, improving the food to new levels of Italian flare. Radici is a cheaper version with dishes starting at £8 and Jay Rayner of the Guardian says,

‘I’ve actively overlooked the large matter of price because of the profound joys of his cooking, which is always right and always encouraging.’

So Radici is an affordable version of his great cooking. We loved it particularly the Zucchini Fritti and any of the pasta dishes. It’s a great place to meet friends and have a casual night out with good food.

The place has been re-decorated in-keeping with the rustic italian theme and has smooth tiled floors so access is easy. The disabled toilet remains at the back of the restaurant. Although the surfaces are hard the acoustics remain good, although it wasn’t crowded when we visited. The lighting is good and there’s plenty of space to move between tables. Radici gets 2.5 BBS Ticks.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

I often go to The Almeida Theatre in Islington as I know they have full access, a disabled toilet and a bar. In addition one of my favourite restaurants is opposite, The Almeida , part of the D&D London empire. Again it has a disabled toilet and flat access. The service is helpful and the food is un-pretentious and french in style.

My companion to the theatre is usually Lieutenant No.4 (see the Lieutenant Gallery under My Latest Exploit). The only disadvantage to this particular theatre is the wheelchair space is in the front row, and on our last two visits the plays involved the throwing of drinks between the actors. Needless to say this can be very disconcerting especially as sitting in a wheelchair puts you a good deal higher than the other seats in the stalls. I do get a little nervous but as long as it’s necessary to the plot I don’t mind!?
