Update 2025: The Coal Shed now has sister restaurants and a London  edition. They still don’t display access information so you have to guess or phone about accessibility.

This review talks about a small lip to the accessible toilet which the reviewer would not get into in their electric wheelchair. So this highlights the need for detailed information or images of accessibility.

The Coal Shed was recommended to us by a Brightonian during a shopping trip.

The fact that is was a short stroll away from our Travelodge Hotel on the seafront gave us an added reason to visit.

What we weren’t told is that this place is very, very popular! So we were a little disappointed to find that it was booked. However, thanks to the staff at the Coal Shed we managed to get a table.

The pavements outside the restaurant aren’t particularly flat, but they were navigable. The entrance to the restaurant was level, and there was plenty of room at the table, despite it filling up quite fast.

The staff were very helpful and made great conversation. They were attentive and never bordered on being over-helpful (if there is such a thing).

I asked about an accessible loo, and was told there was one, although there was a small lip just before the entrance. I didn’t need to use it, but my wife had a look and did say that it was very small and that I would not get in. I will check next time, or perhaps someone else knows different?

So, that’s the accessibility part. What about the meal? Well, I can understand why it’s been recommended, not just by locals but also by national newspapers.
For the main course my wife and I both had the fillet steak, with, er, French fries, (i.e. chips but gorgeous chips!) and a very fine glass of wine. Fantastic.

 

For dessert I had a lovely bitter chocolate ganache, confit orange white chocolate sorbet, blackcurrant and my wife had the artisan cheese selection.

We left feeling we had enjoyed a wonderful meal.

To conclude, if you need a decent sized accessible loo then I’d advise checking this out first. If not, then give this restaurant a go.

 

They seem to specialise in seafood and steak. the steaks costing between £19 and £27. I’d want it to be good at that price………We award them 2.5 BBS Ticks, provisionally until we get evidence of the disabled toilet.
