We arranged a holiday to Menorca as it’s the most unspoilt/commercialised of the Balearic islands. We’d been to Ibiza and stayed in a very good villa, see our review of Ibiza but Menorca is far more ‘old Spain’ with many fishing villages and unspoilt beaches.

We stayed in modern villa just outside of the town of Punta Prima on Menorca’s beautiful south coast. Advertised as accessible it had a lift to all floors, ramps and a twin bedroom with en-suite bathroom with wheel-in shower. It had doors to the terrace and there was then a ramp down to the pool. There were 6 bedrooms in total and the common areas were all accessible – so as a wheelchair user I was included in everything. The only downside was access to the pool itself, there was no grab rail, so I was thrown in on a giant rubber ring with handles and left to float!!

There were plenty of seafood restaurants, the speciality of Menorca is caldereta de llagosta, a spiny-lobster stew and Punta Prima itself had a family seaside ambience of 30 years ago. There were even donkey rides on the beach – not something you’d find in the more sophisticated Mallorca or Ibiza. Menorca is the last of the Balearics to become fashionable but it’s well on it’s way with new restaurants for the affluent visitor. One such restaurant is Binifadet which is actually a winery with a restaurant, set amongst the vines. This was definitely a highlight of the trip. There was a disabled toilet and access is flat once you negotiate the gravel in the car park – not far but difficult in a wheelchair. Well worth it though as food and wine were excellent especially the seafood.

There wasn’t a lot of nightlife in Punta Prima but we did venture to Cova d’en Xoroi, a club located in some caves accessed by far to many steps (150 appx.).We stayed at the top where there was a very pleasant garden bar, in a nearby hotel and watched the sun go down.

The sunsets in Menorca are fabulous and this was a great place for sundowners. If you want nightlife then Menorca Live is a good source of information.

Menorca is a beautiful place for a quieter more authentic taste of the Balearics. Getting around by wheelchair on the roads is relatively safe, there is a wheelchair accessible taxi service but based on the amount of time you waited, they are few and  far between. It’s very much a ‘manyana’ speed of life which in itself proved relaxing.

Lovely part of the world. We stayed nearby to Punta Prima at Binibeca at a villa just opposite Binibeca Beach.

Stayed early May 2019 and managed to get a good week of weather and a dry week. The swimming pool had not warmed up though from the winter season! It certainly freshened you up after a quick dip.

Recommend the Mobile Pizza Van that parks up on Binibeca Beach Car Park from around 11am and stays most days until 9 – 10pm. 😉
