We have recently set up a partnership with Access Advisr – a Tripadvisor look a like for people with disabilities. They recommended we take a look at Indian Summer in Brighton. We previously went on a trip to Brighton which is plagued with narrow streets and a pebbled beach, none of which makes access easy. It should also be noted that a lot of the kerbs in the older part of Brighton can be quite high.

However it’s the seaside season so you should persevere and make the trip, especially as  Indian Summer gets consistently good reviews and are part of the

“vanguard of the new wave of modern Indian restaurants, Indian Summer has been pioneering authentic regional food from the sub continent for over a decade…………….The Brighton favourite is listed in the ‘Top 100’ restaurants in the UK by the Cobra Good Curry Guide………….truly pan-Indian fine dining.”

Access Advsr agree with this and say they have ‘fabulous food’ although there’s a disparaging comment on Tripadvisor about it not being your typical Indian – a positive in our book!!

As far as access is concerned there are two steps into the restaurant negotiated via a portable ramp. Having moved to a new location the restaurant is bigger ‘but sadly there is still no accessible toilet’. We investigated further and the next door restaurant Terre à Terre does have an accessible toilet with grab rails and ramped access throughout. It turns out that this is an award winning vegetarian restaurant and has the following accolades

“The Good For Guide 2015..a trailblazer for vegetarian food since 1993 Terre a Terre has long been confounding cynics with its sheer invention…
A A Gill – Sunday Times ( Oct 2010)…… It is singularly and eccentrically marvellous…”

The food looks interesting and reasonable such as the ‘Muffin Butty’ at  £7.55, a ‘Buttery toasted muffin filled with truffle egg omelette served with tangy brown allspice molasses ketchup’, along with the ‘Broken Bangkok Balls’ £7.75, which are ‘rice balls ripped and refried, loaded with toasted peanuts, palm pineapple vinegar lemon oil dressing with pomelo piece, pistachio purée and Thai basil, finished with smoked tomato mince, served in shizo amaranth and gem bouquet garni with coriander mixed shoots’ – what a mouthful!

We therefore give Terre à Terre an unaudited 2.5 BBSTicks and Indian Summer an audited 2 BBSTicks. Let us know if you’ve been to either.

As well as these restaurants we also recommend the following places for the full Brighton experience:

The Mesmerist – 50’s style club/restaurant. Access is ok but no disabled toilet, they use Pizza Express nearby.

Black Lion – cosy pub that also uses Pizza Express Loo. Access not great.

White Rabbit – a quirky pub but no disabled toilet.

North Laine Bar – good Guinness & a disabled loo.

Concorde 2 – Accessible clubbing with a disabled toilet!!

Brighton Big Screen – open air cinema showing Euro Football, Star wars, Clueless & Mockingjay in summer 2016 – they have a disabled loo.

Hire Beach Wheelchairs to get over the pebble and enjoy the  seaside.

Stay in some luxury in the neighboring Sussex countryside at South Lodge Hotel, Horsham. With a Michelin Star restaurant, The Pass and accessible rooms.

Enjoy accessible Brighton this summer………………..Please tell us if you have a recommendation
