Beach wheelchairs have really caught on in the last couple of years and as they are adopted more and more less able people are being able to enjoy the beach. People in wheelchairs can take part in walks by the sea or just lazing around on the beach along with able-bodied friends and family.

Just like regular wheelchairs, beach wheelchairs come in manual, electric and transport variations. The pros of the beach wheelchair are obvious – they have larger wheels which mean that they can transport you over the sand or stones. Certain beach wheelchairs are even suitable for use in the sea. The cons are that you lose some maneuverability and the bulky wheels do not look particularly stylish or easy to transport.

So, although beach wheelchairs are available to buy, or find local distributors for, at websites like Beach Easy Wheelchairs or Beach Wheelchair, our best recommendation would be to rent one for the day instead. If you wanted to buy one it is perfectly possible to use a beach wheelchair as your everyday chair but they aren’t as attractive as other chairs and might be a bit inconvenient. That is why we would suggest borrowing one from the information centre or tourist office at the beach. It saves a lot of hassle and you can do it for free.

For most people, who don’t plan to spend enough time on the beach to validate buying a whole wheelchair for it, the ideal situation would probably be to rent a chair for the day. These are normally manual wheelchairs which require you to be with somebody to push you.

We’ve found that is possible to rent the chairs, free of charge, at several places. Great Yarmouth has five beach wheelchairs, Skegness one, Mablethorpe two, there are eight in various places throughout Pembrokeshire, two in Brighton and three in Barry. At most of these places you need to leave a small deposit (usually about £20) and you can use the chair all day. There may well be many other beaches providing all terrain wheelchairs, so it’s worth checking before you disregard trying to visit them.

Beach wheelchairs allow the less able bodied to get to the beach. We think they’re brilliant and even better is the fact that you can borrow one for free! A great idea that opens up new options for holidays this summer.

You might think that they aren’t the most stylish of wheelchairs and don’t look too nice but lets be honest, they’re far from the worst looking thing you’re likely to see on the beach!

Everything you said is right, before beach chairs came out, getting to the shore was near impossible and it has opened up a new world for many people young and old, let’s face it, would you rather see someone looking over to the sand and sea, never being able to get there or laughing with their family splashing about and getting sand in their toes. These beach chairs are awesome.
