Update Jan 2016: The Quokka bag can now be bought from EPC see this link.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

When I looked for a stylish bag for my wheelchair I was met with black or neon, nylon back packs – not the designer adornment I was used to. Out of necessity I went for cross body bags but they had to be small as a large shopper would be all that people saw of me. It’s also difficult to wheel with anything larger than a small purse sized handbag. Lady GaGa may be able to get designers to create a stylish wheelchair but the rest of us have to make do!

However, not to be defeated we thought things may have changed and we’ve had another look at the market. Here are the results of wheelchair bags with some style:-

Quokka bags look functional and somewhat sleeker than current mobility bags. They are very functional and fit wheelchairs and walkers alike.

The video explains the functionality – the use of magnets and rings on the zips is clever. There are other colours, mostly dark apart from a bright red one. Unfortunately they don’t appear to sell to the UK?? We’ll let you know if this changes.

Trabasack has been around for while and is also sold through most online outlets but again this is a functional but not very stylish design. The key function is that it operates as a tray on your lap as well as a bag. The Mini version below is £24.95 and comes with a green trim. Beware I’ve seen this for sale on Amazon for £49 ……..no idea why the difference in cost!

Next to mention is RGK, they make equipment to fit you and in desperation I asked for a wheelchair back made of leather with a pouch. They have limited colours and I chose dark red. The result was a very comfortable, breathable back in a colour that matched my wheel rims. I also had a BBS Logo back, made by Pimp Your Chair. Looks good but shouldn’t have chosen a white fabric as it gets too dirty. My leather back is also more comfortable than fabric. They advised against washing it but it came out fine after a 30Deg wash. Both cost around £70 for customisation.
