Here’s a summary of what we have posted on Facebook this week, just in case you missed it or you don’t have Facebook!

Monday 25th May

We started the week this week with an interesting video in which the world was one made for people who have varying disabilities. This means that the able-bodied people in the video are in the minority, for example we see footage of a lady asking for help in a bank and the assistant responds to her in sign language.

If you missed it’s on our Facebook!

Also on Monday the shocking story of the doctors who amputated a man’s leg with a saw that was found in a cupboard… And if you think that’s bad the article, posted by The Guardian, not the by unreliable Daily Mail claims that before resorting to use that saw someone was sent to B&Q to buy one. I mean…. really!?!?!

"Someone nip to B&Q i can't find the saw!"

Tuesday 26th May

This week we have also been promoting a competition we entered to help us get more funding – the Aviva Community Fund. The voting ends today so it’s a bit late to vote for us now but we’ll see how that goes!

Tuesday was pretty quiet this week…

Wednesday 27th May

Wednesday we kicked off the day with a news story about a charity called Sibs who are there to support adults who have siblings with a long term disability. This charity have found that the siblings are an invisible group that need support and this week they were speaking about concerns over the coming welfare cuts and the effect this could have on siblings who give the best support they can.

Later that day a slightly controversial topic, the #StellaChallenge seems to have got the wrong end of the stick this week apparently encouraging random people to approach disabled people and question them on their disability. Stella Young was known for saying “No amount of smiling at a flight of stairs has ever made it turn into a ramp.” and would therefore not support this idea, according to someone who worked with her. Stella Young unfortunately passed away last year but at TedxSydney last week they announced a campaign that is being launched in her name.

Friday 29th May

This week Boras in Sweden won the access city of the year, with a wonderful video to tell us all about it.

We continued with our What If Friday this week, with Steve McQueen questioning cool and talent.

Curiously The BBC are looking for a weather presenter with a disability, you don’t necessarily need a qualification just a disability… Don’t know how to feel about that… Surely it’s important to have a qualification!

Fiona has been posted an interesting video of a new wheelchair design that will get you up and down the stairs – Fiona didn’t seem thrilled by it…

 Saturday 30th May

Today we have posted an article about the UKs first Mayor with a learning disability. Gavin Harding has been elected Mayor in Selby, Yorkshire and he is said ” had to keep pinching myself saying ‘Is this real?”. Good Luck!!
