One of our trusted Lieutenants is doing LeJOG i.e. walking from Lands End to John O’Groats. Known as the ‘Rambling Lieutenant’ she’s finding stylish places along the way and reporting on their accessibility.

Her first, less than rambling, report is on The Scarlet Hotel on the cliff tops in Cornwall.

“It was great, from the spa, the food, the brilliant service… For the disabled, a chance to experience cliff top views, total relaxation with no accessibility problems at all!”

We previously reviewed The Scarlet here.  We gave them a provisional 3 BBS Ticks as all the independent reports attested to not not only their sustainability but also their attention to the needs of disabled people:

It’s confirmed as barrier free and the bedrooms do indeed have walk in showers as they previously indicated:

“One room has a queen size bed and one a king bed which can be twinned if you wish. They are good size rooms, in particular room 22 if you would like to request this room. Both bathrooms have a bath & a walk in shower. The showers have a lowered sink area, a seat in the shower & grab rails.

“The hotel itself has a lift which stops at all floors except the bar area. We can of course take your drink order in the restaurant & bring your drinks to you.”

The Scarlet gets a full 3/3 BBS Ticks.

The next report is from Squires in Braunton, Devon:

“Doing a bit of extra-curricular on the trail (LeJOG). Here in Braunton, near Barnstaple, is reputedly the best fish restaurant in Devon…Squires, right in the centre of of the village. Braunton is more well known for its surf shops and proximity to the endless sands of Saunton, but this local fish restaurant draws a more mixed crowd from all over Devon. And I can believe it judging by the queues to get in at 6:30 pm. Fully disabled friendly. Carluccio’s type styling, with Devon grade friendliness.”

The entrance and ground floor are accessible via a ramp as there are 2 steps to negotiate, with smooth wooden floors. There’s also a fully equipped disabled toilet. They get 2 BBS Ticks for style & accessibility.

Check out our blog over the coming weeks to get the next instalment from The Rambling Lieutenant ……………
