Blue Badge Style Mix Concert Supports Musicians With Disabilities

Blue Badge Style Announces Royal Academy of Music Scholarship for Musicians with Disabilities With A Unique ‘Inclusive ‘ Concert.

April 14 2015 7.30pm at St George’s Bloomsbury, London

To celebrate the launch of a new music scholarship from Blue Badge Style (BBS) for musicians with disabilities at the Royal Academy of Music, an inclusive concert in Central London is being held to raise further funds for the 2015/16 academic year. The multi-genre event, will be a showcase for an eclectic mix of disabled and able-bodied talent. Several acts have already signed up to play, ranging from a blind soprano to a jazz funk band. They will all be supported by The Aldwych Sinfonia – you can hear them below..

Whereas most music events have startling poor disabled access the BBS Mix will be held in unusually accessible surroundings and will be open to the general public as well as invited guests from the world of Paralympic Sport, the Disability Media and various celebrities from the world of disability. BBS is all about going out and enjoying life in style, whatever the disability and this concert will epitomise our ethos of ‘Freedom Shared’”. It will be a concert of inclusion where no genre is left out and no physical ability is excluded – the BBS Mix! From jazz to folk, funk, classical, soul and beyond, the concert will have something for everyone.

It’s currently extremely for difficult for disabled people to get access to live music – either as performers or audience members. Fewer than 1% of tickets at major music events are wheelchair accessible and where they are they tend to be isolated from the rest of the audience. Only 44% venues are totally accessible with disabled facilities (State of Access Report 2014). It’s perhaps even harder for talented disabled musicians to find their voice in the world of music. As with accessing physical buildings, the problem for disabled people looking for a career in music is getting in, not what happens once they get there. This is something that we want to highlight and to do something about. It might not exactly be Live Aid as we certainly don’t have those kind of resources but if we can put on a show and help just one disabled person fulfil their dreams through a scholarship, then it’s worth doing. So come along and enjoy the ‘funk’ and enjoy the ‘fun’. There’s champagne too!!

(To top things off, BBS will also be launching our new look website and App that finds cool places to visit and rates on their style. It’s the only service that considers the importance of style as well as providing access information. There will be champagne ‘in hand’ to celebrate the launch).
