For decades, the stairlift has been the only product on the market for lifting people and wheelchairs up and down stairs.

A rail would normally be mounted to the treads of the stairs or on the wall beside the stairs with a chair or lifting platform then attached to it.

While stairlifts have been trusted by wheelchair users for many years, they do have their drawbacks as they can be unreliable and leave users temporarily confined to the upstairs or downstairs if they break down. They can also be slow, can only carry one person, take up a lot of space and be expensive to service and maintain.

However a new solution for wheelchair users that is rapidly growing in popularity as an alternative or replacement to the stairlift is a real lift designed specifically for the home.

There are many new domestic lifts providers on the market but Stiltz Lifts offer a completely unique and bespoke product. Their Stiltz Trio Lift has been designed for wheelchair users and is different as it does not use hydraulics. Instead it uses a roped drum-braked motor drive system which is contained within the lift car itself and is powered by a normal 13-amp power socket – just like plugging in the kettle.

The Stiltz lift also does not need load bearing walls as it uses a unique dual rail system or ‘stilts’ which create a completely self-supporting structure. The weight of the structure and lift car is carried in compression through the rails into the floor of the home with no extra weight burden on the house.

The Stiltz Trio Lift has a deeper footprint and wider opening than the other lifts in the Stiltz Home Lift Range so it can accommodate a standard wheelchair. It can also comfortably carry up to three passengers. The lift is the only home lift of its kind to be available in the UK and has the smallest footprint of any domestic lift. The Stiltz lift can take a day to install and can be installed almost anywhere in the home.

Looks like a cool new idea, we’ll be looking at it again and seeing how other access systems compare in the New Year.
