We were writing a post about the International Disability Day and whilst researching we noticed some of the alternative, strange and funny international days – so here are some of our favourites!
Talk Like A Pirate Day – 19th September
Gentlemen o’ fortune, Shiver me timbers we’ve missed this one but I thought it was well worth putting it on here so we can all remember it for next year ‘yarr me hearties‘ – for a further list of pirate talk to prepare for next year, go to the website.
Egg Day – 11th October
Eggs are a ‘superfood’ and a great source of protein – this day is to promote the goodness of eggs which are widely accessible around the world. You may have heard of them.
Onto the next… November – Vegan Month!
Self explanatory this one, but do they need a whole month? Maybe it takes a month to learn the very few things you can eat if you embark on this crazy lifestyle.
Sandwich Day – 3rd November
Celebrates one of the most convenient foods: the sandwich – invented/thought of by Earl of Sandwich (John Montagu). I was told in a school assembly many years ago that the Earl of Sandwich used to want to eat beef and other meat whilst playing cards but didn’t want to get his hands greasy so he had his cook put it between two slices of bread, very soon people caught on and would ask for ‘the same as Sandwich please’ and all these years later they are the best thing to take for lunch! You cannot beat a good sandwich!! Nice one John Montagu.
Area Code Day -10th November
This day celebrates phones before the days of mobile phones and how important area codes once used to be in this time where new media technologies are taking over…

Clean Your Refrigerator Day – 15th November
Absolute madness… This should be done frequently not yearly! In fact it doesn’t even need a national day, does it?
Flossing Day – 29th November
Promoting oral hygiene to all of those who take their teeth for granted – you’ll wish you flossed more than once a year when your teeth start decaying and you look like Captain Hook

National Gazpacho Day and Mitten Tree Day – 6th December
Gazpacho – cold soup and as Catherine Tate put it “cold, tomato soup.” “Soup that is cold… They couldn’t even be bothered to warm it up!”
… As for Mitten Tree – it is apparently a book. I had images of some sort of tree covered in mittens…
January… Constipation Awareness Month – no we aren’t joking!
Squirrel Appreciation Day – 21st January
My personal favourite – Squirrels are sweet but dangerous I know someone whose cat lost its tail to a squirrel… It bit it off…. I think that’s a skill to be appreciated!! I do wish we had the red squirrels back but the grey have just taken over the place!
Don’t Cry Over Spilled Milk Day – 11th February
I don’t think this should have a day, I think it should just be applied to all those people who endlessly moan about how hard done by they are even though things are actually pretty good and they just don’t see it because they are so self-pitying! Just saying….
March – National Peanut Month…. Some please have a word with the boss of creating national days, maybe we should make a national nail clipping day!?
If Pets Had Thumbs Day – 3rd March
Yes… I’m serious, every year, same day – check it out. Let’s see if we can do even more ridiculous!!
Ear Muff Day – 14th March
April has some interesting ones… Hug A Newsman Day and Walk Around Things Day on the 4th April.
Ex Spouse Day – Who in their right mind would want a whole day dedicated to an ex-spouse? I think that maybe whoever thought this one up ended on good terms with their ex… Why else would you want a whole day to think about someone you chose to divorce? Unless you’re the lucky minority who ended on good terms.
Lumpy Rug Day – 3rd May
I suppose that means you should chuck them out this day? Not celebrate them, they are completely hazardous! But maybe that’s just my clumsy experience of lumpy rugs and not an accurate one…
Lost Sock Memorial Day – 7th May
Come ooooon! You’ll need more than one of these for all the 100’s of socks you lose in a lifetime.
National Cheeseball Day – 17th May
Honey Boo Boo’s favourite day of the year I’m guessing, after all she did wish she had a sixth finger so she could pick up more cheeseballs at once.
AND Finally:
International Day of Person’s with Disability – 3rd December
Since 1992 this day has been dedicated to educating people on disabilities and to get more support for charities that try to enhance the lives of people with disabilities.
Each year the day promotes a different aspect of disability and informs people of the social and political issues around things such as human rights, independent living and how to help remove barriers that stand in the way of less able people. This year the day is dedicated to putting together a plan and providing an “ideal platform to launch global efforts to help realize the full and equal participation of persons with disabilities in society and shape the future of development for all!” says the UN website.
We will be doing something special up to and including December 3rd……… Keep reading!
