A recent BBC editorial, by the BBC Social Affairs Correspondent, asked if after the success of the Paralympics disabled people had gone back to being invisible again. It’s a startling turn of phrase to use but it’s a feeling which is all too familiar to many disabled people, who sometimes do feel like they’re treated as if they’re invisible. It’s sad but true that, all too often, less able people go unnoticed by the rest of society.

This is why we want to make a visible statement this December on International Day of People with Disability to show the world that less able people aren’t invisible. Falling on the 3rd of December, IDPwD is a United Nations sanctioned day that aims to promote an understanding of people with disability and encourage support for their dignity, rights and well-being. We want to highlight the day with our BBS Guerrilla Sticker Campaign.

To celebrate IDPwD we want to plaster quality disabled facilities with stickers, displaying the BBS Tick logo, showing that we recognise the effort being made to make certain places more accessible for less able people. OK, maybe we won’t plaster facilities but we can put a discrete sticker here or there, to show that these facilities do not go unnoticed, even if the people who use them all too often feel like they do themselves.

Through this ‘guerrilla stickering’ of well thought out accessible toilets, ramps or whatever else it may be, we think we can help remind people that disabled people are here and using these facilities. Hopefully the Blue Badge Style logo will pique people’s interest and then they can scan the Q-code and find out more!

stickers

This idea is all about visibility, so we’d really love to be able to get as many stickers into as many different places as possible. But of course we can’t do this without your help, so if you want to take part in our guerrilla stickers campaign please get in touch with us and we can post some to you for you to stick up on the 3rd. This might not seem like the biggest gesture in the world but every sticker will be a reminder that less able people are still here post London 2012.

If you want to get involved we’ll need to send you some of the stickers. The best way to do this is to contact us by email at info@bluebadgestyle.com or call 0208 568 7353 and we can get them to you for IDPwD!

Let’s get together this International Day of People with Disability to remind everybody that disabled people are not invisible!
