Back at the start of the summer we asked for your stories & anecdotes of stylish nights out – just like the one the BBS Team went on?? The ‘Wheeled in Chelsea’ Competition.

Well here is the Winner & Runner Up, both funny and moving/uplifting respectively well done to everyone who entered and we will be posting some of the other entries that are worthy of note next week.

Winner from James called Sardinia Beach:

Early in June my current squeeze Jenny and I decided on a quick little get away to Sardinia. I have been to this resort before and it is very very access friendly. I suffer with sight loss but at present not total. So picture the scene – Beautiful white sandy bay turquoise seas and lush green mountains falling down to the beach. We had a resort where all the loungers and the towels are provided by the hotel. Feeling particularly hot and confident on the beach I decided I would take a dip. Jenny asked if I would be OK making it across the beach without looking up from her kindle.

I left my white stick in the sand and removed my sunglasses, I felt a sense of liberation. I made my way rapidly across the hot sand to the sea in that very white northern European way we do. Kinda flopped in backwards as dignified as a Walrus would. I had my little swim and decided to make my way back to lounger HQ.

I managed to crawl out of the surf stood up got my bearings and accessed my journey. The sun is bright and the sand is going to be hot. I took very large and definite strides across to my lounger. I landed on the lounger and grabbed the towel and wriggled around drying myself. At the same time I was explaining to Jenny “how effing cold it was in the effing sea” …The “effing sand has burnt my effing feet” The cold sea and hot sand had given me a case of Tourettes……….I didn’t draw breath with my eloquent description.

I was just about to ask Jenny if she could dry my back for me when……..“I think you may be on wrong lounger” the lady explained “Oh f***”……. I had landed on the wrong lounger. Jenny was a few lounger’s to the left with her headphones in and deep into her kindle. I picked up the damp hotel towel and moved along. Jenny asked me “how was the swim?” “Not bad it was the exit that was a bit tricky”!!

James xx the new magoo.

James Oliver – Winner of Wheeled in Chelsea

The Runner Up from Everlene Brewer, Norfolk, Va., USA

I attended a gala affair for the USO in the Hampton Roads area of VA. It was required to wear an evening gown. I wore a long blue gown with metallic streaks and long sleeves. The stole was beautiful mink and my accessories were silver with black necklace and matching earrings. The shoes were silver. I was in a manual wheelchair when I entered the Hampton Convention Center with an orchestra with all violins playing on the upper balcony romantic songs. The CEO and President of the local USO met me there in a tuxedo with a red cummerbund. There were 600 distinguished guests with most all in appropriate military uniforms with lots of ribbons and shining brass  The convention center was completely accessible for any disability one might have. The tables were gorgeously decorated, appealing food, and both red and white wine. The plates were $100.00 each, a fundraiser for the USO with all liquors free. This was my first real “Ballroom Dance”. I certainly enjoyed every phase and was recognized for the work I had contributed to the military personnel by way of letters, cards and care packages. I submit this article in hopes that anyone with a disability will not let any person or event prevent them from go out on the town with confidence  and savor every moment. And, yes, I danced the night away with a good looking soldier. If a person has a choice to sit it out or dance I insist “DANCE“.
