Berghain is a legendary techno nightclub in Berlin. It’s located in a former power plant so it has enormous rooms with gigantic dance floors. The style of the club is intentionally a bit run-down which is exactly how everyone must feel by closing time, which is normally well after sunrise. This is a club for serious, hardcore revellers – don’t bother turning up before midnight.

If the club’s Wikipedia page is anything to go by Berghain is, how can we put this… colourful: “Berghain has a strong reputation for decadence and hedonism; a New Zealand Herald article describes ‘people openly indulging in sexual acts’ inside the club, and the building contains several dark rooms specifically set aside for that purpose.

The bouncers are said to be possibly the most terrifying in the world, operating a brutal and mostly random selective door policy. But when we spoke to Berghain over the phone the staff seemed very friendly. They were helpful and polite, telling us that if you need assistance they will offer to take you from the door to a lift in order to enter the club. Once inside staff will help you in whatever way they can and there is a disabled toilet. It sounds like there are nasty bouncers but lovely staff.

If it’s your type of thing you’ll love it so we’re giving Berghain Club a provisional 2.5 BBS Ticks. We’ll have to wait to hear from some less able techno clubbers before we can confirm that. If you fit the bill please get in touch!
