People might have found it amusing when a man named Bart Simpson appeared in court, accused of carrying a prohibited firearm at Birmingham Airport. Not the fact that someone had a gun at an airport but that he was called Bart Simpson. That in itself would be quite funny; it’s not exactly a common name. But the case really captured people’s imaginations when they saw that the judge for his case would be a certain Mr Burns.
Unless you’ve been hidden under a rock for the last twenty years (and perhaps even if you have been), you’ll know that Bart Simpson is a lovable rogue from popular cartoon The Simpsons. He’s Homer Simpson’s son and Mr Burns is Homer’s nasty and curmudgeonly boss. So it was a funny coincidence when their namesakes came face to face in court recently.
“There were some eyebrows raised when the court list was published,” a court worker told the South West News Service. “It’s a bizarre coincidence that Bart Simpson is actually on trial in front of Mr Burns but it’ll proceed as any other criminal case would.” Why on earth it wouldn’t proceed as normal I have no idea but it’s a good story.
