The Scarlet is a 37 room Eco-Hotel, on top of the cliffs of Cornwall. The hotel has won lots of awards, including the ‘South West Gold Award for Small Hotel of the Year’ in 2011.
They place a lot of emphasis on environmental sustainability. Along with it’s sister hotel, The Bedruthan Steps, The Scarlet won ‘Enjoy England’s Sustainable Tourism Business of the Year’ last year.
The Scarlet is a beautifully designed modern building. It’s a member of Design Hotels on whose website it says: “the Scarlet both capitalises on and harmonises with its environs, providing eco-friendly luxury and remarkable natural views”.
The hotel tries to create as peaceful an environment as it can for it’s guests. The location is an idyllic one on the Cornish coast but they also have a few tricks up their sleeves to increase the relaxation. Chief amongst these is the hotel’s policy of not allowing any under-12s to stay there in order to allow for a calmer atmosphere. The hotel also has an excellent spa said to be the best Ayurvedic spa you are likely to find.
On top of this you are likely to be forced away from the stress of work due to the fact that there is almost no phone signal throughout the hotel.
Somewhat contrary to their peaceful approach the Scarlet welcome dogs to the hotel. They even have their own ‘Hotel Hound’ – Jasper the Dog – who they let visitors take out for walks. Jasper has apparently been a huge hit with guests at the hotel and doesn’t detract from the atmosphere of relaxation but highlights the friendly atmosphere of the hotel.
The designers of the hotel seem to have put a lot of thought into making the building as accessible as possible. When we spoke to them they said they have two disabled rooms; both are in the ‘generous’ price category:
“One room has a queen size bed and one a king bed which can be twinned if you wish. They are good size rooms, in particular room 22 if you would like to request this room. Both bathrooms have a bath & a walk in shower. The showers have a lowered sink area, a seat in the shower & grab rails.
“The hotel itself has a lift which stops at all floors except the bar area. We can of course take your drink order in the restaurant & bring your drinks to you.”
The Scarlet is a peaceful and beautiful place to stay with very good access. It receives a provisional 3 BBS Ticks.
