Listing Description

Update Sept 2017: We visited Pergola Paddington Central and you can see the evidence in the photos below. Extremely accessible even on the pebbles which are just a thin layer that can be easily swept aside to expose flat concrete flooring. There are 2 levels linked by a very smart lift and both have decking but with thin imperceptible slats so easy to wheel and walk on with sticks. On the upper level is the day bed area of private booths and a standard size manual chair can just about access these.

Totally Flat Access in Sheldon Sq. Leading to Security at the Door of Pergola
Well Signposted, 2 Minute Wheel From Taxi/Car Drop Off
Flat Access at Entrance. Whole Space Covered in Smooth Decking …..
Ramp at Fire Escape
Day Bed Area Just About Accessed in My Wider Chair
Day Bed Area Booth
Street Food Cafes & Bar Not at Wheelchair Height But One of The Friendly Staff Will Assist
Decking on Lower Pergola Level. Benches & Pebbles…….
But only a Thin Layer & Can Easily Sweep Aside to Expose Flat Concrete
Spot The Difference………No Bar……
15 Mins Later Bar Fixed to Wall
5cm Step To Accessible Toilet…….
24 Hours Later………
Ramp Installed. 21st. Century service, Bring it On!

The music is great and the ‘street food’ cafes are cheap and decent fare. The party atmosphere is really what you go for. The service couldn’t be more helpful but it wasn’t crowded when we visited. They have a 2 year lease on the space and a covered Pergola on the lower floor which means they’re open for the winter of 2017. What was exemplary was the way they immediately fixed inadequacies in the accessibility. There was a grab rail missing in the disabled loo and a 5cm step to access the toilet. Within 15 minutes they fixed the missing bar and the next day there was a ramp at the step. This is a semi-permanent/pop up bar and the speed by which they improved access is unbelievable, considering I know of many Michelin Star restaurants who’ve taken years to make the most minor improvement.

If this is 21st century service the future looks great if you’re less able. They get a well deserved 2.5 BBS Ticks and a nomination for Best Budget Bar at the BBS Awards Oct 4th.

In our review of accessible roof-top bars Pergola Paddington Central got this mention:

“Two new West London rooftops are Pergola on the Roof, White City and Pergola on the Roof Paddington.  These are only open 3rd May-1st October so you need to hurry if you want to experience something new and more than just a pop-up restaurant. They say

“Our mission is to take unloved and unused spaces and turn them into unique, big and beautiful outdoor destinations – our winning formula consists of the best restaurants, city skylines, drinks, atmosphere, music, seating for all and general good times – all under our iconic pergola.”

Both venues look amazing we especially want to go to White City as it’s on top of the Television Centre in Wood Lane! According to their website both are wheelchair accessible and have disabled toilets. However they do have pebbled areas as they’re bringing ‘The Hampton’s to London’ and warn not to wear high heels so this could prove difficult if walking with sticks. They also invite other restaurants to provide the food i.e. 8 Hoxton Square, Salt ‘n’ Sauce from Bonnie Gull, Breddos Tacos, and Patty & Bun. At White City they have 600 seats, five 13-person day beds, self-service dining, summer tunes and a roof in case of rain. At Paddington this increases to 850 seats and five top restaurants including vegetarian, vegan and gluten free. They also encourage large parties of up to 199 people – not sure we’ve got that many friends – but it’s good to know.

A Taste of The Hampton’s or Miami Pergola Welcome Large Parties, Families and Those Less Able
Pergola Paddington Gives Even More Food Choice With 5 Guest Restaurants. More Industrial in Style it Overlooks the Canal

We’ve asked for more detail and will update when received, in the meantime they both get a provisional 2.5 BBS Ticks for the ultimate in style and maybe in accessibility.
