Listing Description

Over Xmas my family & friends kept me busy by arranging trips out! This included a visit to Berners Tavern, (part of Edition Hotel previously reviewed here), a visit to The Vaudeville Theatre to see The Duck House and a visit to The Opera Tavern in Covent Garden. All enjoyable in their different ways and here are my belated reviews (Xmas excess got the better of me):

First off it’s Berners Tavern which we reviewed as part of our 3BBS Tick recommendation for the Edition Hotel of which it’s part. This time I went for a proper meal. The wheelchair was not an issue and the “Egg, Ham and Peas”, which is a deep fried duck egg with mushy peas and crispy ham, was brilliant and only surpassed by the Chocolate filled Donut with cinnamon sugar and almond sorbet. Served warm it’s filled with molten chocolate which sounds over indulgent but was so light and tasty I nearly didn’t give my companion a taste. A super meal, great service and the accessible toilet is good (in the Hotel’s lift lobby so not too far away; maybe a stretch if walking with sticks). So Berners Tavern gets its own 3 BBS Ticks.

Next our trip to the Vaudeville Theatre which has wheelchair seating in the Stalls but there are 6 stairs to get down and there wasn’t a disabled toilet in that area. They do have a Stairclimber to get you down the stairs but my companions found it easier to carry me down. It was unclear if there was a disabled toilet but the staff were extremely helpful and as is common in many London Theatres, I had someone allocated to me to help me around. The Duck House Farce was sometimes funny but not as fast as it should’ve been – maybe 2 days after Xmas Day and a matinee wasn’t the best performance to go to. Although the Guardian review agreed with me that Ben Miller as the Labour MP defecting to the Tories was good and the Russian Housekeeper got plenty of laughs but the rest was rather predictable and sometimes totally lacking in timing. Diana Vickers as a Dominatrix was a case in point.

Afterwards we went to another ‘tavern’ The Opera Tavern, Covent Garden for tapas. There is limited space and a large step to get in but I would recommend going here as the food & atmosphere are very enjoyable. There is a ‘quasi’ accessible toilet i.e. it’s large and on ground level but no grab rails etc. Service was very efficient and friendly and the Tapas is as good as any I’ve had in Spain. The cheese filled Courgette Flowers were really delicious. They get 2 BBS Ticks as stylish & fun but just need to add some rails!

Back to normal now and I promise to keep you up to date with all the new places opening around the UK in 2014.
